Clearing paved the way for call centre worker to write her own future

“Having people around you that want to see you be your best is so important and I hope to find that everywhere that I go, but it is one of the things about Staffs that is really valuable to me.”

Sian Davies, BA (Hons) Creative Writing

Former call centre worker Sian has achieved a first class in Creative Writing after applying to Staffordshire University through Clearing.

Sian Davies, 28, Market Drayton, applied to study BA (Hons) Creative Writing just two weeks before the start of the course.

Dedicated to being a high achiever and supporting her friends to do the same, she commuted to the Stoke-on-Trent campus each day for lectures and social events.

She said: “I already don't want to leave the campus the lecturers or the course. I'm going to miss everybody so much.

“I'll miss being in lectures with my friends. Just being around the lecturers and having the opportunity to drop in to see them during their office hours if I need help. Those are the things I'm going to miss.

She found that all elements of her course linked together and helped to develop her as a writer.

“Poetry isn't my bag at all but I still found the poetry lectures really valuable. There are so many English modules that allow for creativity too." Sian explained.

“I did a whole crime scene America module and was able to write a crime scene story for my assessment."

Sian credits her success to her own hard work paired with the support of her accommodating and encouraging lecturers.

“The teaching staff are so good. They're so open to so many things that help to explore you as a writer." she commented.

“The interaction with lecturers has helped me to be more creative and explore my talent. They are always there for anything from tutorials to quick chats about work and life in general.”

Sian will be starting a master's degree at Bath Spa University in September but will always treasure her Staffordshire University experience.

“Having people around you that want to see you be your best is so important and I hope to find that everywhere that I go, but it is one of the things about Staffs that is really valuable to me.”
