“The depth of the placement attracted me, there are lots of aspects to the role which will help me going forward, especially the teaching aspect which I have been doing through Scouting.”

James Malpus, BSc(Hons) Creative Music Technology

A Staffordshire University music technology student has landed a sought-after placement with a world leading orchestra.

21-year-old James Malpus will undertake the Discovery Digital Placement with The London Symphony Orchestra from September and will be based at St Luke's Music Education Centre.

The 12-month role will see James who is studying BSc(Hons) Creative Music Technology assist with audio and video recordings of events and projects over the coming year as well as supporting the LSO Discovery Digital Projects Manager and tutors to deliver music technology education programmes.

James said: “My Lecturer informed me as I was looking for a placement for my third-year and after finding out all about the placement with London Symphony Orchestra I knew it was something I could do.

“The depth of the placement attracted me, there are lots of aspects to the role which will help me going forward, especially the teaching aspect which I have been doing through Scouting,” he explained.

The London Symphony Orchestra is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading orchestras. Its many activities include an energetic and ground-breaking education and community programme (LSO Discovery), a record company (LSO Live), and exciting work in the field of information technology.

With aspirations of working in radio James already has some experience behind the microphone having presented his own show, ‘Blue Note Jazz’ on Monday evenings  from 10pm until midnight for Stafford FM.

“Part of my five-year plan is to work in radio and I am hoping that this placement and the networking opportunities it will provide me with will open a few doors,” added the second-year student.

The BSc(Hons) Creative Music Technology course allows for an option of a year placement and James will spend the next 12 months earning experience in the world of arts administration, music education and media technology.
