Former striker turned student to feature in TV documentary

“I am really enjoying my time on the course, after 20 years in the game you are in a routine, with this I am out of my comfort zone; we have essays and deadlines to meet so it’s very different.”

Former Stoke City striker Chris Iwelumo is to feature in a new documentary about his career after football which is to be shown on BT Sport and Sky Sports.

Iwelumo, who started Staffordshire University’s BA(Hons) Professional Sports Writing and Broadcasting in October spent the day on the Stoke Campus being filmed by Premier League World, discussing his new venture into the world of punditry and presenting.

“The guys are doing a piece with me today, seeing what I am up to now I’ve finished playing and seeing the kind of stuff I get up to here at the University on the course.

“I am really enjoying my time on the course, after 20 years in the game you are in a routine, with this I am out of my comfort zone; we have essays and deadlines to meet so it’s very different.”

Iwelumo spent the day showing Premier League World his new skills behind and in front of the camera and also tried his hand at using the autocue in the Broadcast Newsroom.

“I really enjoy the broadcast side of things, doing a bit of presenting and offering opinion. Having played, I think I can offer some good thoughts on the game.” He adds, “The presenting or pundit route is where I want to go.”

The former Scotland international already began acquiring media work before he ended his playing career.

“I’d done a bit of work with talkSPORT when I was still playing but at the moment I am doing bits for Stoke City TV and their YouTube Channel. It’s about doing features, interviews and just getting that fan interaction, it’s been really good experience and we’ve got lots planned.

“I’ve also done interviews for the match programme at Stoke City and bits for the Football League Paper and Scottish Sun,” explained the 36-year-old.

Iwelumo says that returning to education didn’t daunt him as he revealed his previous career aspirations to be a teacher.

“I did all my GCSEs and got A levels in English, Art and Physical Education, so I was ready to go to University when I was younger,” he added.

  • Chris Iwelumo’s documentary is scheduled to be shown on BT Sport and Sky Sports from February 4.
