Graduation marks new chapter for aspiring author

“To be graduating and to be a published author in the same week is absolutely amazing!”

Sally Roberts, BA (Hons) English and Creative Writing

An aspiring author from Stoke-on-Trent is celebrating having a book published and graduating in the same week.

Sally Roberts, 21 from Tunstall, discovered a passion for storytelling at a young age and went on to study English and Creative Writing at Staffordshire University.

She explained: “I've always been interested in writing ever since I was little. The first story I wrote with my Dad and it just grew from there.”

“One of my favourite subjects on the course was Shakespeare and that enhanced my own writing because it helped me to develop my characters.”

During her degree, Sally responded to call on social media to preview author G. M. Sherwin's first novel and after striking up a relationship, the pair decided to write a book together.

Sally said: “I thought why not? I'm doing a Creative Writing degree which helps with editing. Then I sent a sample of my own work and he asked if I wanted to write a book together!”

The resulting novel 'First Dawn' was published last month during the same week that Sally graduated from Staffordshire University at Trentham Estate.

The fantasy story, which follows characters Sam and Carl as they fight to prevent the apocalypse, is available to buy from major retailer Amazon and is the first in a series of books that Sally plans to write with her co-author.

'Blue', a creative writing project which Sally developed during her course, has also been published and both books are set to be turned into audiobooks.

She said: “To be graduating and to be a published author in the same week is absolutely amazing!”
