National Royal Television Society Award nomination for Staffordshire filmmakers

“We think the care and effort that went into creating everything from scratch really shines though in the final film and we are very proud of what Zero-G has achieved so far.”

Staffordshire filmmakers are celebrating after receiving a national Royal Television Society Awards nomination.

Staffordshire University graduates James Wilkinson and Sam Renton are one of three shortlisted contenders hoping to capture the best animation award at the RTS Student Television Awards which will be held at the Barbican, London, on May 25.

They qualified for the national competition after their stop motion animation ‘Zero-G’, which depicts one man’s ambition for flight, scooped the Midlands RTS award in the same category in March.

James, a BSc(Hons) Film Production Technology graduate from Staffordshire University, said: “The regional competition was very tough, so we are delighted to get a nomination for the national awards and hope Zero-G can go one step further.”

Since graduating, cousins James and Sam have launched their own Stafford-based production company, Tentacle Media.

“We are being kept very busy with projects for the UK and American market, so to see our own independent project do well is hugely satisfying.” James added.

Sam Renton, who studied BSc(Hons) Film Production and Music Technology at the university, says the memories of making the film will stay with them forever.

“Every part of the animation was made by hand, from character design to sets, it was all put together and filmed in a small garage in Stafford.

“We think the care and effort that went into creating everything from scratch really shines though in the final film and we are very proud of what Zero-G has achieved so far.”

Staffordshire University film lecturer, Fiona Graham, said: “We are delighted with recognition and success that James and Sam are achieving.

“Across all of our film awards at the university our students continue to achieve recognition and these prestigious awards are proof that the university continues to be frontrunners in the film industry.”
