“Each year we're inspired by stories of people who have transformed their lives through University and we'll be using this opportunity to urge more young people to consider their higher education options – in an environment that is familiar to them.”
Deborah Sanderson, Head of Graduate and Business Relations
An organisation dedicated to developing young people is to get an inspirational Education Zone thanks to a new partnership with Staffordshire University.
YMCA North Staffordshire, which supports up to 1500 young people a month, has transformed a room in their Harding Street premises to inspire young people about the Higher Educations options available to them.
Staff and student ambassadors from the University will use the Education Zone to talk to interested young people about a number of education pathways from Step Up to HE – designed for people who have taken a break from education - Foundation and Degree courses and Higher and Degree apprenticeships.
Head of Graduate and Business Relations Deborah Sanderson said: “We've had dealings with the YMCA over a number of years and with support from the Bertarelli Foundation, we wanted to formalise the partnership so that we can directly engage the young people who access its services.
“Each year we're inspired by stories of people who have transformed their lives through University and we'll be using this opportunity to urge more young people to consider their higher education options – in an environment that is familiar to them.
“In addition we're planning to have an increased presence at the YMCA through students and graduates who could be undertaking work experience or volunteering and through subject taster activities which can take place in the Education Zone.”
As part of the refurbishment, the University has commissioned graphic design company Weather to provide inspirational designs for two feature walls.
Danny Flynn, Chief Executive of the YMCA said: “The YMCANS and Staffordshire University have formed a partnership. We both believe in the gifts talents and skills that all young people possess. Together we believe we can unlock those gifts and talents.
"Today we are launching the education zone at the YMCA campus. The zone will focus on offering Young people opportunities to invest in themselves and together we provide the necessary support and guidance to make sure those life chances stick as we help young people be the very best they can be. The Bertarelli Foundation will also be supporting this project as we all #lovestoke."
