Professor Michael Gunn has taken up his new role as Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Staffordshire University.
Professor Gunn, succeeds Professor Christine King CBE, who is assisting in the transition process and continues to serve the University in the role of Vice–Chancellor Emeritus until March 31.
He said: “I am delighted to have joined Staffordshire University at such a significant time in higher education. The sector and the University face challenges not least as a result of the changes to the funding of Universities and of higher education generally.
“However the University is in a good place to meet those challenges and we will be building on our strengths to deliver a first class experience to students now and in the future.
“I am keen to provide the leadership necessary, with my colleagues across the University, to ensure that we address the challenges successfully and with determination and commitment.”
Professor Gunn has spent his first week in post familiarising himself with the University’s main campuses, meeting University staff and representatives from partners organisations and attending a reception event for international students.
He added: “I’ve been particularly impressed by the friendly and supportive welcome I’ve received, the openness of people working within the university and outside organisations, and the belief that this University benefits positively the wider community. It was a lovely way to end my first week – greeting our international students and I look forward to meeting more students as the term progresses.”
Professor Gunn previously worked as Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University of Derby with responsibility for key parts of the university's academic work.
Prior to that he worked as Dean of Nottingham Law School at Nottingham Trent University and has held positions at the universities of Nottingham, Westminster and De Montfort. His academic background is in mental health law and the law of decision making; subjects on which he has written or co-authored more than 100 papers, case notes and reports.
