Roadshow to kick-start Uni business week

“Clearly the energy and creatively of our students can be a major force change and we are encouraged by the fact our students are leaving university with the tools and entrepreneurial spirit to set up their own businesses right here in Staffordshire.”

Staffordshire University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Paul Richards.

Staffordshire University will kick-start a series of events to inspire budding entrepreneurs during Global Entrepreneurship Week (November 12-18) with the opening of the Stoke Business Village Road Show.

The event, which is being opened by Stoke-on-Trent council leader Mohammed Pervez at Staffordshire University’s Science Centre, Leek Road, Stoke, on November 13, at 1pm, will offer practical help and support to early start-ups and people who are considering taking the plunge into business.

During the road show, companies from Staffordshire University’s Business Village will be joined by members of the Business School, North Staffordshire Chamber of Commerce and Stoke-on-Trent Council to provide information and advice.

Now in its fifth year, Global Entrepreneurship Week aims to help and inspire those people in the early stages of developing their businesses. It has also recognised the University’s support to the campaign by labelling its activities as high impact.

Staffordshire University will host further workshops, talks and networking opportunities during the week, including a talk by Kevin Oakes, Steelite International CEO and Midlands Entrepreneur of the Year 2012.

Young pupils from Stoke-on-Trent will also be taking part in the week’s activities, swapping the classroom for the boardroom in a Dragon’s Den styled competition held at the university.

Staffordshire University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Paul Richards, said: “We are driven to be a key part of the economy of North Staffordshire and one of the challenges we face is the relatively low numbers of business start ups, but we can be part of the solution.

“Clearly the energy and creatively of our students can be a major force change and we are encouraged by the fact our students are leaving university with the tools and entrepreneurial spirit to set up their own businesses right here in Staffordshire.”

Paul Williams, Head of the School of Business,  and Associate Dean James O'Kane will welcome the weeks’ activities at an opening ceremony held in the Science Centre, November 13, 10am.
