Rollercoaster ride to success for student Josh at Staffs

“I never thought when I was going through my illness that I'd graduate and look at me now. I'm so proud of myself and that is beacuse of the support from my course.”

Josh Lonsdale, BA (Hons) Event Management

Josh didn't let illness come between him and his studies while at Staffordshire University and has graduated with a first class honours degree in Events Management.

It was at an open day where Josh Lonsdale, 21 from Leyland, fell in love with the campus and he believes his results reflect the support provided by his lecturers since that very first visit.

He said: “In my first year at Staffs I became seriously ill. Determined not to give up, I reached out to my lecturers to see what support was available.

“Angela Lawrence and Carol Southall couldn't have done more for me. They opened my world up to a bigger network of people in the Staffs family.”

They introduced Josh to the Students' Union and helped him to maintain good grades whilst he recovered from his illness. Once Josh was back on top form, he wanted to give back by volunteering and helping his fellow students and staff.

“I brought back Staffs Raising and Giving (RAG) from the ground and raised money for good causes. The highlight of my university experience was putting on an event, as part of a module, to show staff how much we appreciate them.”

Having graduated with first class honours Josh's talent has been recognised and he recently landed the role of film production intern for the University’s Business School.

“Even though I don’t come from a media related course, the university felt that I had earned the opportunity and I'm looking forward to gaining more skills that will help me with my events management career.”

He added: “I never thought when I was going through my illness that I'd graduate and look at me now. I’m so proud of myself and that is beacuse of the support from my course.”
