"Mum always helped me out if I was struggling with something. My whole family at home have been really supportive."
Beth Hobson, BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies
Mum and daughter duo Lisa and Beth from Meir were all smiles as they graduated together from Staffordshire University.
They experienced very different student lives with Lisa Hobson, 42 studying BA (Hons) Education part time and Beth Hobson, 21, moving onto the BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies degree straight from her A Levels.
Determined to become a primary school teacher, Lisa worked full time as a teaching assistant whilst achieving her first class degree and is now planning to complete a PGCE.
Lisa said: “I'd always worked in retail and I thought that I wanted to do more. I started off as a teaching assistant and built myself up to completing the education degree through part time study.”
Although Beth didn't bump into her mum on campus, she did say that it was great to have someone at home who understood the demands of studying.
She said: “Mum always helped me out if I was struggling with something. My whole family at home have been really supportive.
“Staffordshire University is local for me; I wanted to stay close to home. I'd visited with College as well and I was really impressed.
“Once the first week was over and done with I really settled in, I've met some amazing friends and had a really good experience.”
Lisa said: “There is loads of support and the lecturers are amazing and so knowledgeable. I would really recommend Staffs.”
Beth achieved a 2:1 in her degree and is now planning her next career move. As she considers a future in social work, her mum couldn't be more proud.
