Staffordshire University's nursery is celebrating after being rated 'outstanding' by Ofsted following a recent inspection.

The on-campus nursery, based at Winton Square, was assessed this summer and has received the highest possible judgement in all areas under review.

The report praises the quality of teaching and learning at the nursery, the effectiveness of the management and the children’s behaviour. Also highly commended is the staff’s commitment and their relationships with children and parents.

Amanda Sherratt-Smith, Head of Childcare Service, said: “To be recognised as outstanding is a tribute to all of the hard work and dedication of our early years team.”

The nursery was praised for the range of activities undertaken with the children including encouraging an interest in wildlife with bird watching and looking for bugs, growing herbs to use in home-made dough and developing a strong empathy with animals in 'pet time'.

It has also taken part in pilot schemes run by Stoke-on-Trent City Council aimed at improving children's communications skills and speech as well as emotional development.

“We're always eager to take advantage of initiatives that can help us to provide our children with the best start in life. Recent statistics have shown low literacy levels for the region but if we can work on building the foundation for those skills at an early age then it will have long term benefits for the children and the City.” commented Amanda.

“We are unique in that we can provide extra guidance for students with children – whether it be help with applying for financial support or advice on managing your time – as most of us here have been there ourselves! But we are open to all members of the public, not just those from the University.”

Amanda added: “We're delighted with the report and want to say a huge thank you to all parents who took the time to speak personally with our Ofsted inspector or forwarded written feedback, it meant such a lot to us."

The nursery also offers student on teaching and childcare courses work experience and has been recognised internally with an award from the University for its contribution to employability.

Following Staffordshire University's £40m campus transformation, the University’s Stafford nursery has merged with the nursery at the new city campus in Stoke.
“It's a really exciting time for the nursery. We’re delighted to welcome the new children here in Stoke.” commented Amanda.

"We will be striving continually not only to maintain our high standards, but to develop and enhance our practice further.”
