Dusa and the Fish

Dusa, Fish, Stas and Vi - 13/14 December 2006

Written by Pam Gems in 1974, 'Dusa' is the story of four young women who share not only a flat but each others struggles, hopes and fears. All the women in the play reach a watershed in their lives, which is shared through their friendships, arguments, humour and love. Pam Gems wrote of the play: 'it has two main themes. Fish the pathfinder the women attempting to break out a new equitable way of living and finding resistance and Fish the upper-class woman who can give help but who is usable to receive it'

Cover art for Smashed

SMASHED - 24/25 March 2006

'SMASHED' is a documentary theatre piece produced by Level 2 students on anti-social behaviour and the issues surrounding it. It has been devised using interviews with members of the community combined with original research material that the students have collected and assembled into a script and developed in rehearsal.

A documentary play is not a single authored work. The scenes you will witness and the dialogue you will hear were not created by a dramatist.

The Word on the Street - 26 April 2006

Rob Lacey's dangerously real retelling of Scripture vividly demonstrates that the bible is packed full of stories/poems/images that resonate with the big issues of today.

This fresh paraphrase with running commentary brings the text alive: Bible stories are retold as mini-blockbusters;psalms as song lyrics; epistles as emails; Revelation as virtual reality.

Sins of the Mother - 2006

Sins of the Mother is a play about daughters whose growth is inhibited due to the weakness of a mother, who has allowed herself to succumb to her own Mother's love for the bottle. She denies her daughters the chance to blossom through her dependence on them to support her habit financially and emotionally.

The consequences become clear as the first signs suggest history is being repeated and the daughters are forced to make life altering decisions.

The story is about how trying to make life better by just ignoring the truth and covering over the surface of problems is not the best solution.

Some Things You Need to Know Before the World Ends - 29 April 2006

The setting is the bombed-out, post-holocaust sanctuary of a church, where the reverend Eddie (clad in long underwear) prepares to deliver his final sermon "Life is like a basketball game" Abetted by his faithful helper, the hunch-backed Brother Lawrence, Reverend Eddie first embarks on a series of wildly funny skits in which Saint Paul and Saint Timothy discuss the shaky position of women in religion; an applicant for sainthood agonizes over what sort of martyrdom to pursue; and the Reverend challenges Death to a final showdown on the basketball court.

And throughout, there is an unseen but undeniable presence of "The Illuminati", a mysterious but all-powerful force which guides the destiny of what's left of the world.
