About Tony

As soon as I finished university I was applying for jobs and sending out applications and letters all the time. I sent one to the Angling Times, my favourite publication. After viewing samples of my work and meeting me, they decided to offer me a job as a news reporter – on the Angling Times! Dream job for me! The publication is a weekly national newspaper that is Britain’s top selling angling publication.

I feel as though I could happily work here all my life at the moment. There are plenty of opportunities for promotion which give me something to aim for in the years to come.

What did you like about your time at Staffs?

The best thing Staffordshire University offers you is the ‘hands-on’ approach. As a student, you are constantly given opportunities to send out material to professional publications as part of your assessment. This proved to be invaluable for me, as without the six months freelance experience on two local angling magazines I gained by doing this I wouldn’t be where I am now.

The course also covers every area of journalism you could possibly think of, and plenty of modules you wouldn’t think of!

Away from my job, if you are interested in general newspapers, NCTJ is essential. The amount of jobs I applied for turned me down on the basis of me not holding all the NCTJ’s was unbelievable!
