Nick Winn - BA(Hons) Journalism, 2008

Study before university: College International Brillantmont, Lausanne Switzerland

After graduation I moved to London hoping to find a job in either journalism or PR. I spent three weeks in a paid internship at Bang! Showbiz, a news agency supplying gossip websites with showbiz stories. After this I started a placement at Rostrum Communications, a corporate PR company based in Liverpool Street. I worked as an intern for a month before being offered a full time position as an associate. I’m now working here, speaking to national journalists on the business and money pages and enjoying the new challenge!

Goals - continue to work in PR, with the eventual hope of moving into a PR or media job in rugby. Pipedreams of course!

The course was completely hands on, which helped prepare you for working in the media world. You gradually build up your skill set from the first year working on simple news and feature stories, to the third year where you set your own assignments, giving you independence, but still have the safety net of being able to talk to tutors and course leaders alike. Because, in essence, you are a working freelance journalist throughout the three years, you understand how best to approach stories, and for me, now, how to approach journalists.
