Sports Journalim students on assignment

Sports Journalism students from Staffordshire University recently studied form at Uttoxeter Races as part of their award.

Thirty students interviewed jockeys, trainers and owners and wrote news reports which had to be filed on a midnight deadline.

Their work was marked by the assistant Editor of the Racing Post, Bryan Pugh.

The trip was organised by Peter Brookes, Senior Lecturer in Sports Journalism. He said: "The students enjoyed the day immensely - they got to look behind the scenes thanks to the excellent facilities provided by Uttoxeter Managing Director David MacDonald and his staff.

"And for students to have their work marked by one of the leading racing journalists in the country, is a great insight for them."

The students also wrote lengthy features on racing themes. It is hoped some of these will appear on the Uttoxeter Races website.

Local Derby

Staffordshire University students covered the local derby between Burton Albion and Shrewsbury Town Reserves as part of their sports broadcasting studies.

The students were split into five camera teams and filmed the match from the main TV gantry and at pitchside.

After the game - which ended in a 3-0 victory for Shrewsbury - the students interviewed the respective managers for their reports.

The students will produce three-minute Sky Sports-style packages featuring the best of the action.
