Examples

In this section we demonstrate some of the map and charts that might be generated, using the CD-ROM included with our Counting Heads ITC Resource Pack.

Industry and Commerce

The Tables for both 1851 and 1991 show the distribution of people employed in agriculture, manufacturing and services in each county. The map below shows the percentage of men employed in manufacturing in 1991.

Education

In 1851 a special census of education was undertaken in Great Britain. The maps below shows the percentage of boys aged 5-14 attending school in 1851. Figures have been recalculated on the basis of the 1974 counties to simplify the materials for school children.

Welsh Language

The 1891 census was the first to include a question on the Welsh Language. The table on the left shows the percentage of Welsh speakers in 1991.

Ireland

In addition to the material on Great Britain the SECOS program also includes a set of Tables on Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The map below shows the population density of Ireland in 1851.

The following graph shows the fluctuating population of Northern Ireland between 1821 (when the first full census was undertaken in Ireland) to 1991.
