AIM25 (Archives in London and the M25 Area)

A major project funded by the Research Support Libraries Programme to provide a single point of networked access to descriptions of the archives and manuscript collections of the principal colleges and schools of the University of London, of other universities and colleges in the Greater London area and of some of the principal royal colleges and societies of medicine and science based in London. The archives of more than fifty institutions will be covered.

American and British History Resources on the Internet

This site attempts "to provide a searchable structure" for historical resources on the Internet. It lists websites generally by subject and by period;sites providing documents, maps,statistics, bibliographies, electronic journals, etc. as well archival collections.

British Library Collection

A guide to the holdings, archival and secondary, of the British Library, but which also lists other websites of related interest, e.g (under 'Slavonic & East European Collections') the guide to Slavonic Internet.

COPAC

COPAC is the consortium of university libraries in the UK - currently about twenty, but expanding in number-whose catalogues are on-line, accessible via Staffordshire University's own website. It is thus possible to find books, including shelf-marks, not held by Staffordshire, but available in other regional institutions.

History On-Line (IHR)

An electronic History review which allows fuller discussion of books reviewed, including replies to reviews by authors.

INCORE (University of Ulster): Initiative on Conflict Resolution and Ethnicity

Essentially an electronic forum and database for research in this area, includes the Ethnic Conflict Resolution Digest, an Information Bank etc.

Institute of Historical Research (University of London)

The IHR is part of the University of London's School of Advanced Studies, and is a vast collection of printed primary sources, all available to historians and postgraduate students on open shelves. This website offers a search engine for on-line history resources in the U.K. but also in Europe and the rest of the world; this includes information on archives, libraries, manuscript sources, national centres, etc.

Internet History Sourcebooks Project

Edited by Dr. Paul Halsall, Fordham University. Offers collections of public domain and copy-permitted historical texts for educational use. Sourcebooks include Modern History, African, Asian, Jewish and Women's History.

Library of Congress Catalogue

The on-line catalogue of the United States Library of Congress is a database of ca. 12 million records, including books, serials,manuscripts,maps,recordings and visual materials.

Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives (King's College London)

A complete catalogue of the military archive amassed by Capt. Sir Basil Liddell Hart. Hundreds of pages summarising thousands of letters, photographs, official documents and published articles.

The National Archive of Ireland (An Chartlann N'aisi'unta)

A wide-ranging site, with catalogues of various government department records, including the Department of Taoiseach (Prime Minister), Foreign Affairs and Justice, as well as the Relief Commission of 1845-47, a new index on 'Transportation to Australia 1791-1868' and many records relating to genealogy and family History.

Public Record Office

The central government archive in Britain, based at Kew, now has its catalogue on-line. It is possible to search for documents without leaving one's home area; ticket-holders can order specific files in advance of a visit to Kew.

The site also includes a link to "The Learning Curve" which is an on-line teaching resource designed to tie in with the History national cirriculum.

Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts

Provides access to the National Register of Archives, with information about collections of manuscript sources for British history; ARCHON (Archives On-Line), the U.K. archival 'gateway'; and the new Manorial Documents Register, which is now partly available on-line.

Simon Wiesenthal Centre

The centre itself, together with its library and archive, is in Los Angeles; but the website contains useful bibliographic guides, databases such as the Living Heirs Project (Listing over 50,000 names of Jewish victims whose assets are still held by Swiss, French, British and other banks), Cyberwatch, which monitors the use of the Internet by groups etc.

The British Library Public Catalogue

A useful website allowing on-line searches of the library archives as well as an ordering service for the libraries document supply centre.

Non-commercial site provided by volunteers to provide extensive genealogical information with particular relevance to UK and Ireland

Victorian Web

Advice on navigating and extracting information from "The Victorian Web" site.

Caribbean Studies - Black and Asian History

RSLP funded resource site promoting the development of historical research into Black and Asian history. Site includes archives as well as audio/visual resources.

The Untimely Past (History and Postmodernism)

An on-line bibliography relating to "the intersection of historiographic practice with post structuralism, postmodernism and allied areas of theory and practice".

History Net

Extensive archive and resources on the history of warfare from eyewitness accounts to aviation and technology.

H-Net

Humanities and Social Sciences on-line. This site is run by a worldwide network of scholars and includes essays, multimedia materials and on-line discussions.
