Centre for the study of Chartism

The Centre is located within the Division of History (Faculty of Arts, Media and Design).

The undergraduate and postgraduate work at the centre is underpinned not only by the well-endowed History resources but also through the Dorothy Thompson Chartist Collection in the Special Collections Room of the University Library.

This collection was donated by Dorothy Thompson (who is also an honorary doctor of the university) and includes 300 books and pamphlets - many of them extremely rare - 33 radical chartist journals, parliamentary papers and state trials.

In recent years some of the research work at the centre has been published by The Merlin Press, London as part of their Chartist series publications.

Fred Deakin History Resources room

Our students benefit from an extensive collection of text books in the Fred Deakin History Resources Room.

The books have been donated over the years by former students and staff. The room was opened on the 18th July 2003 by Fred himself.

The Historians joined family and friends to honour Fred, who had donated a large number of books to support the room over the course of his studies.
