A Few Facts...

  • The Guardian reported a study that concluded Philosophy students (out of all possible university subjects) are the happiest with their degree course. Happier students put their heart into their studies, and get better results! Moreover, a major recent study in the United States ranks Philosophy graduates at the top of humanitiies subjects for their after-graduation earnings, and above also several science and business subjects.

  • See our ranking in The Guardian's annual list of Philosophy Departments. Second ranking department in the whole of the Midlands OR the Northwest! And, we think, the best small department in the country.

  • As researchers, all staff here are of international standing (no teaching-only staff). Our work was officially praised by the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. 80% of our research publications over the past few years were classed as of 'Internationally Recognised Quality' or of 'International Excellence'! Unlike many Universities, however, this prestige does not mean that students never get to study with these staff. On the contrary, here our staff with high research profiles also teach undergraduates every semester.
  • Staffordshire University is a fully accredited member of the higher education system of the United Kingdom; see the listing on the government website.

  • We received an Excellent rating by the QAA (the Government's Quality Assurance Agency) in the last round of teaching quality inspections. This overall quality was reconfirmed by the glowing 2005 and 2010 QAA inspection visits to Staffordshire University as a whole.

  • We teach well over 200 students every year, including 75 on undergraduate philosophy degrees, and 20 studying at postgraduate level - and more than 94% would recommend Staffordshire to a friend.

  • The College Road campus is a friendly, exciting and convenient place to study. Everything you need - library, Union, classrooms - are within a few yards of each other. The halls of residence and private residential housing are just a few minutes walk. The mainline train station is just across the road. Moreover, Stoke is one of the least expensive places in the country to live, meaning that you can graduate with thousands of Pounds less in debt (and perhaps none at all).
