Staffordshire University's Regional Data Laboratory was set up in 2002 to enable research to be done in mapping. Facilities include:

  • ARCVIEW
  • MAPINFO
  • large-scale colour printing and plotting
  • virtual reality GIS with 3D mapping and visualisation

Projects completed or being carried out at present using the RDL facilities include:

  • Medical Research Council. Social Ecological Mapping of Physical Activity Behaviours and Health Outcomes in Deprived Inner-city Communities, 2006-7.
  • Green Arc Partnership. Green Arc, Phase 1 and 2 (Design and build a GIS to aid feasibility studies, awarding of grants and monitoring of change around the M6 Toll Road. Evaluate transfer to internet), 2005.
  • Office of the Deputy Prime Minister. Air Quality Index for the Index of Multiple Deprivation, 2004, updated 2005.
  • Health and Safety Executive. A National Population Database for Major Accident Hazard Modelling, 2003, updated 2006.
  • Environment Agency. Environmental Quality and Social Deprivation. Phase II: National Analysis of Flood Hazard, IPC Industries and Air Quality, 2003.
  • Staffordshire Ambulance Service. Spatial Analysis of Call-out Information, 2003.
  • Health and Safety Executive. Analysis of Impact of Proposed Changes to Separation Distances for Mode A Registered Premises Holding HT4 Fireworks, 2002.
