Biodiversity, green space and healthy urban environments

This varied area of work embraces a range of themes relating to biodiversity, greening the urban environment and the links between neighbourhood characteristics, activity and public health.

In this latter area, IESR staff have recently contributed to a major Medical Research Council project by providing social ecological mapping of physical activity behaviours and health outcomes in deprived inner-city communities.

Expertise within the IESR research teams also extends to developing a wider understanding of how biodiversity can help ameliorate the impacts of climate change and atmospheric pollution in urban environments.

Apart from the MRC, key funders of work in this area have included Earthwatch, the Environment Agency, Renew North Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent City Council.
