Job Title and Responsibilities

Professor of Social Work Education and Spirituality

About Me

I have been involved in teaching social work at Staffordshire University since 1993, having previously worked as a Probation Officer, University Chaplain, and Minister in the United Reformed Church. I have helped to establish a very strong Service User and Carers Group to enable social work students to develop their communication skills, and in 2009 this Group was awarded a Community Care Excellence Award for their work.

My own excellence in teaching was recognised by the Higher Education Academy in 2004 with the awarding of a National Teaching Fellowship, followed by the granting of prestigious Senior Fellowship status.  My National Teaching Fellowship Project enabled me to explore ways in which spirituality and religion can be incorporated effectively into the social work curriculum. I became Director for the Centre for Spirituality and Health at Staffordshire University in 2003, and have helped to establish the Centre’s reputation as an emerging centre of excellence. Spirituality remains my principal area of academic interest in publications, conference presentations, and in leading study days and Masterclasses.

A developing interest lies in the use of labyrinth walks as a method of developing reflective and meditative skills for personal, professional and educational development, and I am planning to make full use of my portable labyrinth for such events in the near future. For further details about my work and publications, please visit my website in related links.
