Senior Researcher in Healthy Urban Planning

About me

I am a Health Psychologist and Senior Researcher at Staffordshire University. On behalf of Public Health and the Stoke-on-Trent City Council Planning department, I ensure that health is a routine consideration in planning policy and decision-making. Alongside this, I lead research that contributes new knowledge in relation to healthy urban planning to develop best practice and contribute to the broader evidence base.

My background is within Health Psychology and Social Psychology with eight years applied research experience. I have worked on a diverse range of projects addressing public health, exercise and physical activity, the impact of the natural environment on health and healthy urban planning.

Enterprise and Commercial Activities

I have experience of working on HEIF projects with Matrix Fitness Ltd, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service and Cheshire Constabulary as well as funded consultancy work with Stoke-on-Trent PCT, South Staffordshire PCT, Staffordshire County Council, The Dove Service, Stoke-on-Trent City Council, South Staffordshire Council and Cannock District Council.

I have successfully bid to conduct research for the COST network exploring patient voice, a systematic review for Shropshire Primary Care Trust and a systematic review for West Midlands Strategic Health Authority on nurse education.

Provision guidance on ethics, research methodology and conducting service evaluation for South Staffordshire PCT. My current role in the Centre for Sport, Health and Exercise Research is to explore training and implementation of Health Impact Assessment. I have written research bids and consultancy proposals totalling over £51,000 in funding to date.

Research Interests

My research interests are healthy urban planning, patient-practitioner communication and the use of effective communicative strategies; exercise behaviours and barriers; preventive and therapeutic effects of natural environments, the impact body image can have on health behaviours and adapting to long term conditions.

Alongside my role I provide training to health professionals and postgraduate students. I cover topics including critical appraisal, qualitative research, long term conditions, applied health psychology, communication of complex information, HIA and health inequalities.

Current Teaching

I have provided teaching in qualitative methodologies, critical appraisal skills, health psychology, public health and physical activity at undergraduate and post-graduate level. I occasionally teach Masters and Doctoral students in health psychology as well as health professionals in practice.
