Senior Lecturer in Media Studies
I am currently a Senior Lecturer in Media Studies in the Faculty of Arts, Media and Design. I am Award Leader for the MA in Media Management (VLE DL) and Pathway Leader for the Islam and the Media pathway on the MA Global Society and Media Communication (VLE DL). I have taught on a wide range of modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level in media, cultural and social theory. Currently this includes Investigating Audiences, New Media and Society, Pop Will Eat Itself and the MA modules Media: Contexts and Change, Islam and the Media, and Work Placement Module.
About me
After completed my MA in British Cultural Studies at Warwick University (1993) I taught in FE for several years leading an undergraduate Social Science degree. This inspired me to read for a PhD in the Centre for Mass Communication Research at Leicester University. After successfully completing this in 1999 I joined Media Studies at Staffordshire University. Since then I have been active in developing courses and carrying out research (see profile below).

Research Interests
I have published and presented widely on the area of the representation of Muslims in Britain. This includes the reception and consumption of mainstream and new media both by Muslims and non-Muslims. I have experience of both quantitative and qualitative content analysis and audience research. Other research interests include ethnicity and the news, religion in the news, diasporas, new media and audiences. I am currently working on a 2 year AHRC/ESRC funded Religion and Society programme research project with Leeds University on ‘Media Portrayals of Religion and the Secular Sacred’.
I am a member of the C-MAT research Centre in the Faculty.
