Careers Adviser – Stoke and Stafford Campuses

In my current role I undertake the full range of Careers Adviser duties. I design and deliver careers education inputs for courses within a number of faculties. These range from lectures, presentations and workshops to more complex problem based learning packages and Personal Branding training for creatives and entrepreneurs on our SPEED and EFS schemes. I work closely with academics to plan and integrate careers into accredited modules and collaborate in the production of supporting materials for the Blackboard Virtual Learning Environment. I develop a range of careers materials including online careers talks and recently an online careers module for RAF staff. I conduct individual guidance interviews and drop in advice sessions with students, graduates and postgraduates from all Faculties. I deal with all aspects of career planning, job hunting and managing the graduate selection and recruitment process as well as helping students who are considering self employment or starting a business.

About Me

I graduated from Staffordshire University with a BA Hons in Modern Studies (English and History) in 1980. After completing my degree I was elected to the post of Vice President of the Students Union, based on the Stafford Campus. I then joined Staffordshire County Council as a trainee Careers Adviser and they funded me to completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Careers Guidance at UCE. I then worked as a Careers Adviser in Staffordshire schools and colleges for 12 years before taking up a post here at the university. Along the way I set up my own small publishing company, Highflyers Publishing Ltd, with my partner Mike Shaw. Through this company I have written and published a wide range of careers resources for use by careers professionals and students in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. I have had articles published in a wide range of careers work related professional journals and I also run training courses for career professionals around the UK on a wide range of careers related topics.

In 2006 I was sponsored to attend a Careers Professionals Conference in the USA and subsequent to that I undertook training with a leading American company, the Reach Corporation, to become a Certified Personal Brand Strategist.

“I am passionate about helping graduates to realise their career potential because I believe our graduates are our future. I want to help as many graduates as possible to find joy and meaning in the careers they pursue. I believe that this is not only in their best interests but, as the future managers and leaders of business and industry, it is also in the best interests of our economy and society and all those people who will work for them in the future.”
