I am fascinated as to how health care is organised and delivered across Europe (and further afield too) I have published extensively on comparative studies of the medical and nursing professions across Europe, as well as on the subjects of New Public Management (NPM), governance, e-health. Recently I have extended my interest to the comparative study of patient and public involvement in health care within Europe. I have written or edited (with others) a number of books on these topics including the following: Leadership in the Public Sector: promises and pitfalls (Routledtge 2012), Questioning the New Public Management (Ashgate 2004), Remodelling Hospitals and Health Professions in Europe: medicine and nursing and the state (Palgrave 2003), Managing Professional Identities: knowledge, performativity and the ‘new’ professional (Routledge 2002).

I have chaired, until recently when the project ended, the ‘User Voice group (WG03) within the EC COST network (http://www.cost.eu/domains_actions/isch/Actions/IS0903): ‘Enhancing the role of medicine in the management of European health systems’ (Action IS0903) and I am currently (early 2014) working on a number of publication projects stemming from the group’s work. I have also led the EPICog research a major NIHR e-Health project (see below). I have good links with PCTs and hospital trusts within the West Midlands and I am currently working with colleagues on new projects, which in addition to e-health and user voice includes issues around integrated care and care pathways.
