Expertise

As an Accredited British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences practitioner, Chartered Psychologist and Chartered Scientist, I have experience of working with individuals and teams to enhance performance. Informed by my research and teaching interests, my consultancy work focuses upon (a) thought processes and how they affect future behaviours and (b) development of elite managers and leaders.

Enterprise and Commercial Activities

I have worked with a range of athletes in individual and team sports, including tennis, golf, rugby, basketball, football, athletics and hockey, and have been a consultant for performers and coaches in the South West Rugby Academy and Richard Huish College. Combining my experience with my research and teaching interests, I am currently working on a couple of innovative projects:

Executive Leadership
I am leading on the development of a novel and exciting programme that provides elite business managers with unique insight into elite sport, outlining the principles and practices of leadership and team dynamics. Business and elite sport share many similarities: both demand success and require leaders to deliver that success. The lessons from elite sport can help businesses succeed and be considered ‘elite’ within their field. As such, the programme is designed to facilitate the transfer of knowledge from elite sport to business environments.

Professional Doctorate in Sport and Exercise Psychology
I am currently involved in the validation process of a Professional Doctorate in Sport and Exercise Psychology at Staffordshire University. The Professional Doctorate will provide Stage 2 training required for Chartered membership with the British Psychological Society and registration as a Practitioner Psychologist (Sport and Exercise Psychologist) with the Health Professions Council.

Research Interests

I am a member and contributor to the Centre for Sport, Health and Exercise Research. My main area of interest is in sport psychology. The research that I have published reports the construction and confirmation of measures of attributions and social support, together with the main and interactive effects of attributions upon self-efficacy and performance. Current research interests are centred upon attribution theory, theories of social support, and social identity theory.
