Counselling Appointments

You can make an appointment to see a Counsellor at Stoke or Centre of Excellence Stafford by telephoning or emailing our admin team, or in person at Stoke via the Student Hub.

Please note that our e-mail address is for enquiries and making appointments only. It is checked during our opening hours by our admin team who will respond to your request, usually within one working day of receiving your email (excluding weekends, Public Holidays and occasional days when we are closed).

If you feel you need support urgently, please phone our admin team during opening hours, so that we can arrange an appointment with a Counsellor as quickly as possible.  (Also see Emergency and 24-hour Support for other options, particularly if you are seeking support outside our opening hours.)

Appointments usually last for 50 minutes each. We can offer appointments by telephone if you are a Distance Learning student, a student based at Shrewsbury or unable to visit the Stoke or Stafford sites for an appointment.

Your first counselling appointment will be an assessment session, during which the Counsellor will discuss with you whether counselling from us is appropriate and if you would like further appointments, as well as what other support is available. If counselling from us is appropriate, you will initially be offered up to 5 further appointments, although students sometimes prefer to make occasional, one-off appointments, rather than attending regularly. (There is usually a waiting list for students wanting regular appointments.)  There may be the possibility of a limited number of further appointments after this in any given academic year and the Counsellor will discuss this with you.  You can re-access the service in any future academic years whilst you are still a student here.

If you are unable to keep an appointment it is important that you let us know, so the appointment can be offered to another student.  (You are welcome to book another appointment if you would like one.)

Please note that missed or cancelled appointments will be counted as part of your agreed number of appointments (unless you give us more than 24 hours notice or are unable to attend an appointment due to illness or other exceptional circumstances).

If you would like information about accessing other support while you are waiting for a counselling appointment, please see our Information about accessing other support (PDF, file size: 47.91KB) .
