Simon was born in Leith, Edinburgh before emigrating to California. After leaving high school in San Diego, Simon studied History and Political Science at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington where he graduated with Deans List Honours. On completion of his BA degree, he moved back to Edinburgh where he worked in the hospitality and entertainment industry.
Simon’s first experience in the education sector was teaching English in Italy for three years before moving back to Scotland to gain an MSc in International Conflict and Cooperation (with distinction) from the University of Stirling. Simon then achieved a PhD in International Relations from Loughborough University where he wrote his dissertation on the relationship between the European Union and NATO. Simon has been a Teaching Fellow at Loughborough University, a Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at Aston University and a Research Officer in the Department of Politics, Languages and International Studies at the University of Bath.
Simon took up the position of Lecturer in International Relations at Staffordshire University in 2016 and is now Associate Professor of Security and International Relations in the School of Creative Arts and Engineering as well as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Simon is also currently Editor-in-Chief for the academic journal Defence Studies, a visiting Professor at the College of Europe and the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom. He is also a Research Fellow at The Scotland Institute in Glasgow.

Simon is married to Katie and they have a young daughter Freya. In his free time, Simon enjoys playing music, surfing and travelling.
