Sports activities during COVID-19

The Sir Stanley Matthews Sports Centre opens its doors again! 

To support your health and fitness journey, we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to create a safe environment for you to visit and we’ve made some changes to how we usually do things.

Our changes have been guided by the experts at UK Active, the UK government and  Public Health England. Please read this information carefully — we know it’s a lot to take in, but it’s important that we all work together to keep our centre safe.

Soft Opening – Monday 7 September 

Current staff and existing members.

Mon – Fri 7.30AM – 7PM

Current members can reactivate their membership by coming into the centre.

We will be open to come and have a look round and to show the safety measures we have in place.

Full Reopening – Monday 14 September

All including new members

Revised opening hours Monday – Friday 7.30am - 10pm

Saturday – Closed

Sunday – 12 midday – 9pm

These revised opening hours allow us to meet safety requirements on staffing and cleaning levels to ensure the best experience for all of our customers, and are in line with UK Active guidelines.

If you are a new member please visit https://www.staffs.ac.uk/about/facilities/sports-centre/gym-membership if you are a returning member please pop into the Sports Centre to reactivate your membership.

We’re going to keep you safe

  • We’ll be screening all members on arrival to ensure your safety (we may implement temperature checks if required)
  • We’ll be cleaning and disinfecting our centre more than ever with an enhanced two-stage cleaning process, using detergent and disinfectant to sanitise all gym equipment
  • We’ll have plastic shields at our reception desks
  • We’ll be supplying even more self-cleaning equipment, so members can clean down equipment before and after use
  • There will be multiple hand sanitising stations available throughout the club for members to use

We’re changing how our sports sessions work

  • We will have a full program of sports sessions for you to take part in, these will be guided by each sport’s governing body guidelines and you will be able to access these through the Welcome information you will be receiving.
  • As you may expect, we’re reducing the number of people in our sessions, and placing ‘stand here’ markers on the floor to help our members maintain the 2m distance rule
  • Sessions may be shorter than usual (30 - 50 minutes) to make sure we have enough time to clean and help members leave safely
  • If the gym becomes too busy we may need to implement a booking system that we will communicate through our social media feeds

We’re maintaining social distancing rules

  • It’s really important that we all keep 2m apart at all times – including all sports sessions or in line with National Governing Body Guidelines for individual sports. Where we can, we’ll implement a one-way system, with signs to show you which way to go
  • We won’t have as many lockers available as usual, so please consider how many bags you bring
  • Our changing facilities will be available but unfortunately at present the showers will remain closed, we will keep you updated when this changes.

Let’s do this together – we need your help

  • To make this work, we need to work together. Here’s how you can help:       
  • If you feel sick or experience Covid-19 symptoms, please don’t come to the centre
  • Arrive dressed and ready to workout
  • Use our hand sanitising stations when you enter a new area (and again when you leave)
  • Use our cleaning materials to clean your equipment and mats before and after you use them, disposable paper towels will be available for your use
  • Don’t share equipment, and don’t move weights or benches to other parts of the club
  • Bring a full water bottle as our water fountains won’t be available
  • We’re cashless, so bring a debit or credit card if you’d like to buy something
  • It’s unlikely the centre will become full. But if it does, we might need you to wait before you enter the gym floor (and stick to the social distancing markers)
  • Exercise for only an hour — that way, every member gets the chance to use our facilities

Social and Team Sports

Our social and team sports will be running and guided by each sport's national governing body. We are currently working with the University and the British Universities & College Sport (BUCS) closely to develop a ‘return to play’. Advice is evolving as restrictions change, so we'll continue to monitor and update our plans to ensure it's in line with the what the government is advising.
