This module examines the pathophysiology and physiology of the respiratory system and the management of COPD. It examines the management and treatment of patients with both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, together with the psychology of disease management.
The module will enable students to develop their knowledge and understanding of peak flow measurements, spirometry, correct inhaler techniques and self-management plans for patients.
You must be a qualified health professional working with patients in general practices, the wider community, and hospital or long term residential care environments.
The module has been developed to improve the care provided to patients with Asthma & COPD as both are major causes of morbidity and mortality in the UK. The module aims to improve the knowledge base of health professionals working with Asthma & COPD patients in hospital or community settings to enhance the level of patient care, and will empower the health professional to make an early intervention and ensure treatment is of the highest standard. Key elements of the course includes; pharmacology, acute exacerbations, oxygen therapy, physiotherapy, rehabilitation, palliative care and explores the differences between Asthma and C.O.P.D.
As a formative assessment process, within a specific scenario, you will be expected to:
Demonstrate a respiratory inhaler device
Demonstrate use of a PEF,
Explain a procedure and/or results relating to spirometry.
Summative assessment: (Level 6)
A 3000 word reflective case study (100%) (Learning outcomes 220.127.116.11)
This module is designed for practitioners who work in either acute or community care setting and will enable students to gain the knowledge and skills to manage patients with COPD, and asthma and differentiate between the two conditions.
This Level 6 15 credit module is for qualified health professionals working with patients in general practices, the wider community, and hospital or long term residential care environments.
The module endeavours to develop knowledge, understanding and management of COPD and Asthma and is delivered by a wide multi-disciplinary team to give a holistic approach to care.
