This course explores real-world applications of mentoring skills in various settings and helps you develop supportive relationships in your family, community or organisation.

You will examine the distinctions between mentoring and other helping practices including performance coaching and counselling.

Through a series of structured exercises and case studies, you will develop an understanding of the core skills and competencies necessary to the mentoring role. You will also explore the application of mentoring skills in various settings and consider the role of reflection in developing professional competence in the field.

Issues to be considered include: aims and objectives of mentoring schemes; the mentoring/mentee relationship; effective communication; contracting and time management; ethical issues and confidentiality; evaluation and review of mentoring outcomes.

This course is a 15 credit module and can also be studied at Level 4 (Introductory).

Entry requirements

We welcome applications from people with a wide variety of qualifications, skills and experience. For Level 4 we would normally expect students to have two A levels or equivalent in any subject, and for Level 7 a first degree (BA or BSc). Please talk to us about your background as all applicants are considered individually.
