You will study modules that are relevant to your work issues, and be assessed in an appropriate way, set by the University tutors. This means that you will achieve both a university award and a CIPD qualification. You will need to be a studying member of the CIPD. The membership fees of approximately £120 are in addition to the tuition fees quoted above and will be payable direct to the CIPD. You will have at have least two years' experience of working in HR in a managerial, senior managerial or strategic role.

Staffordshire University has over 25 years’ experience of preparing students for their professional qualification and many of our former students are now senior HR executives in local and national organisations.

Teaching and learning

Be prepared for a challenge: the pace will be fast. Instead of relying on theory, the course is based on 'problem and practice based learning', where real and live business issues provide the foundation of your study. Whilst some of these issues form part of the core teaching, many will be drawn from your experiences in Human Resourses and those of your fellow colleagues.

This means you'll work collaboratively with well-known organisations, fellow professionals and teaching staff to tackle real-world, authentic problems at every stage. Applying yourself to practical problems will help you develop the skills that you need more quickly and more robustly than conventional classroom learning.

You will experience a wide range of assessment techniques. There are not only the more conventional individual written assignments and examinations but also individual and group presentations using a variety of different media.

Employment opportunities

You will usually be in full or part-time employment with varying degrees of HR working experience. The programme allows you to achieve an award of real value to the HR professional. It has both an academic and professional standing within the HR community and beyond. It is seen as an essential qualification for HR career progression. Moreover, the course will also contribute to your continuous professional development; you will have the opportunity to develop as independent learners able to apply both academic and practical skills to your current work and in more challenging HR roles in the future.

Graduate destinations

You can use this course either as a stand alone qualification to improve your HR practice and professional standing, or use it towards gaining improved membership grading with the CIPD in the future. This can help in obtaining work and promotion in HRM and/or HRD. Graduates have progressed to senior HR roles at organisations large and small, both locally and internationally, including Alton Towers and Virgin Media.

Upon successful completion, you will also be in a position to continue your studies in the CIPD Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management, leading to the MA in Strategic Human Resource Management.
