Assessment of learners is often an area of teaching that health and social care workers are apprehensive to undertake. By looking at the theory behind assessment and appraisal of knowledge and performance this module aims to improve confidence in your assessment decision to develop competent and able practitioners of the future.

This module is one of 4 modules you can study to obtain the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education which, upon completion, would enable you to apply for accreditation with the Higher Education Academy as Associate Fellow.

Graduate destinations

Students undertaking this module would normally be employed within the health or social care sector and successful completion of this module / award would be for personal and professional Continuing Professional Development.

Entry requirements

A professional health or social care qualification / IELTS score 7 / Active involvement in workplace teaching/assessment is preferred

Module outline

This module encompasses all aspects of learner feedback, both informal (formative) and formal (summative), and explores the challenges to both teacher and learner when undertaking assessment in the workplace. The module explores models of providing feedback as well as addressing how to manage the challenging / failing learner.

The validity and reliability of assessment will be explored; the role of appraisal as a formative process to guide continuing professional development in all professional groups, and the link to revalidation or re-certification for some, will be considered; models and timing of evaluation will also be examined.

You will critically analyse and reflect upon the evaluative / assessment process you utilise with your learners within the healthcare setting.

This module is one of 4 modules you can study to obtain the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education which, upon completion, would enable you to apply for accreditation with the Higher Education Academy as Associate Fellow.

Students who complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education can progress to complete the MSc Medical Education or the MSc in Negotiated Learning- Health and Social Care
