Care and Management of Respiratory Disorders (COPD)

Overview

Sharpen your knowledge around the care and management of two of the major causes of mortality in the UK: asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

As a health professional, it is vital that you are up to date with current practices in diagnosis, intervention, treatment and care. With the experts at Staffordshire University, you will explore the application and interpretation of lung function tests, alongside practical aspects of spirometry and inhaler techniques.

The module aims to improve the knowledge base of health professionals working with Asthma & COPD patients in hospital or community settings to enhance the level of patient care, and will empower the health professional to make an early intervention and ensure treatment is of the highest standard. Key elements of the course includes pharmacology, acute exacerbations, oxygen therapy, physiotherapy, rehabilitation, psychological care, palliative care and explores the differences between Asthma and COPD.

Delivery Method

Scheduled Learning and Teaching Activities: (48 hours) - 18 hours class discussion / group work, 18 hours lectures, 4 hours group tutorials, 8 hours clinical practice.

Guided Independent Study: (102 hours) -32 hours self directed activity, 20 hours writing assignment, 40 hours reading, 10 hours library

Entry requirements

You must be a qualified health professional (including nurses and paramedics) working with patients in general practices, the wider community, and hospital or long term residential care environments.
