Develop as a global citizen with our BSc in Climate Change and Society. A cutting-edge degree which provides a firm foundation for an environmental career in climate studies, sustainability science, environmental justice and advocacy.


Our BSc Climate Change and Society is designed to nurture the next generation of ‘Global Citizens’ by developing a holistic appreciation of the biggest challenge facing humankind – that of rapid human-induced climate change and the environmental and economic impacts associated with it.

We explore the role of society and culture in responding to our climate crisis in a sustainable way at local, national and international levels. We provide a thorough grounding in climate and land system science, whilst developing your practical understanding of emerging green technologies and new modes of sustainable living. We provide internationally recognised and certified training in Carbon Literacy.

We also expose our students to the contentious but critical debates about managing our changing environment, and provide exciting opportunities to:

  • consider the politics and governance of sustainability and climate change
  • explore the complexity of the links between economic activity, lifestyles and climate change
  • evaluate practical adaptation and mitigation strategies
  • develop the skills needed to communicate with a wide range of stakeholders including the public and critical decision-makers

What role will environmental advocates play in responding to the climate crisis? Can we create environmentally just sustainable societies for the future? Will you be part of the necessary changes?

To ensure your employability, the course will seek accreditation through the Institute of Environmental Science providing our graduates with their first steps to a rewarding environmental career as a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv).

Fieldwork opportunities are embedded throughout the course both as a series of residentials and single day visits. In Year 1 (3 day UK residential), in Year 2 a series of day visits associated with each module (5 – 6 across the year) and in Year 3 a substantive overseas field course, using sustainable travel (trains) to visit cities such as Amsterdam / Copenhagen who are at the forefront of green issues and sustainable city living. It is going to be offered with a placement year opportunity.

Course content

Year 1 has three complementary strands: social, physical and environmental. You’ll develop a thorough understanding of the physical basis of climate change and then set this within a societal framework. The principles of sustainable development will be introduced and the role of global institutions in delivering the UN sustainable development goals will be discussed. Key global challenges such as ocean acidification, de-carbonising society, desertification, deforestation, migration, urbanisation and population flows will be explored in detail.

In Year 2 you will consider the role of international organisations, politics, business and civic society in delivering a stable environment and a more equitable future. You will explore the strategies and responses required for a “green transformation” including those needed to sustainably produce the food, energy and resources we use. A further core module will deliver a range of practical skills including data analysis and visualisation, interviewing and questionnaires, communication, fieldwork and laboratory skills. Specialist option modules are available in conservation, an urbanising world, environmental change and natural hazards. You choose those topics of interest to you across the social and/or environmental spheres.

If you choose to undertake a placement year, you will then spend a year working with an appropriate employer to build your CV and develop your career skills.

Year 3 provides you with the opportunity to undertake a substantial piece of independent project work on a topic of your own choosing. This is complemented with an international field course where you will examine environmental mitigation and societal adaptations to our changing world. A unique challenge-based module will see you work in small groups over a short timespan to respond to a real-world environmental issue set by employers. You then complement these core activities with specialist option modules where you can access our research specialisms in climate and environmental change, deglaciation and its impacts, landscape science, sustainable cities and human-technology interactions.

Our aim is to provide you with maximum flexibility to follow the topics that most interest you and to co-design your own learning pathway through your degree.

Careers

Our graduates are literate, numerate problem solvers who can think critically and understand the importance of people and place and the complex connections between them. Their holistic skills are in demand in environmental consultancy, civil and local government, third-sector employment (wildlife, social good, human health charities), information corporations and emerging “green” technology sectors.  Many are pursuing successful careers in teaching. Our graduates also pursue further study on research degrees.

This is a burgeoning area of new jobs. Every single local authority in the country is currently seeking Climate change officers to help draft and deliver zero Carbon plans. Each business in the UK needs to engage with this sustainability/ climate action and are also actively recruiting in this area. Jobs are emerging across the public and private sector to meet this pressing demand – there is a severe skills shortage which we will be well placed to fill.

Teaching and assessment

Teaching

This course will be delivered in a blended manner (both online and in person). You will be taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, webinars, workshops, laboratory and IT practical sessions and fieldwork. Small group sessions will enable you to discuss and develop your understanding of topics taught. In addition, you will have timetabled meetings with your academic mentor. You will be taught in first-class learning spaces throughout your course, both online, and in person at the University campus. Your learning will be supported by our excellent online VLE and Digital Communities. Towards the end of your study you will shape your own learning through option choices and independent project work.

The BSc Climate Change and Society is delivered by the Environment and Sustainability Team at Staffordshire University which sits within Biological Sciences. We are an experienced group of academics who have delivered highly rated courses in the environmental sciences for over 25 years. Our associated Geography courses have achieved 100% overall student satisfaction in the NSS in 2017, 2018, 2019. We sit within the Life Sciences grouping at the University and collaborate with our colleagues in Ecology and Sociology to deliver this new and exciting course.
