Our HNC / HND Creative Media (Games Development) course through Staffordshire University, is a BTEC (Pearson) industry wide recognised Level 4 & Level 5 vocational qualification. The course is designed to progress and enhance the skills and techniques previously studied from a Level 3 games course, to prepare you for either further study at Level 6, or in readiness for your employment in the gaming industry. The course is delivered over 2 years with year 1 HNC followed by the year 2 HND. When you have completed the HND, you will have the option of moving into employment or in completing a top-up degree, to gain a full bachelor’s degree, such as through Staffordshire University.

On successful completion of study, we will issue the following award: HNC Creative Media Production (Games Development)

Course content

    • The development of Game content, including level design and gameplay design
    • The production, workflow, project and team management of game studios Development
    • Specialist nuances of Game Design and the roles in industry
    • The language of the Games industry

    • Understanding the business, marketing and legal issues surrounding the industry

Entry requirements

Students should have had previous study at Level 3 Games Production, such as UAL at Merit, or MMP at BTEC Level 3. If you have not achieved these grades your applications are still welcome, but subject to an interview and portfolio check. Students should also have GCSE English and Maths at grade 9-4 (A*-C).

We welcome applications from mature students without these qualifications but with relevant Games Production Experience.

If you have not achieved your intended grade for maths and English, you will have the opportunity to continue studying these at the college. You will also be developing these skills within your study programme

 
Careers

The Gaming sector is the most successful entertainment form of the 21st century, with sales surpassing the £4billion mark, and its thriving in the UK. According to BFI’s Screen Business Report, the number of people employed in the UK games industry, in full-time equivalent jobs (FTEs) has surpassed to 75,000. Of these workers, 24,020 were employed in direct developing and publishing roles such as:

Teaching and assessment

Fees

For the course starting on 23 September 2024 the tuition fees are:

Tuition fees for HNC-Full-time
Study option UK / Channel Islands
Full-time £5,950 per year of study

UK and Channel Island students: This tuition fee is agreed subject to UK government policy and parliamentary regulation. If the UK government passes appropriate legislation, the fee for subsequent years of study may increase in each academic year. But this increase will not exceed the rate of inflation as measured by RPIX**. Any change in fees will apply to both new and continuing students. The University will notify students of any change as early as possible. Further information about fee changes would be posted on the University’s website once this becomes available.

**RPIX is a measure of inflation equivalent to all the items in the Retail Price Index (RPI) excluding mortgage interest payments.
