This course is ideal if you're interested in product design, creative engineering, innovating your ideas, collaborating with others and problem based learning. If you like to investigate by taking products apart to see how they work you’ve come to the right place!
If you want to develop your ideas, solve problems, make prototypes, use 3d printers and get hands-on with tools and materials this is the course for you. It’s been developed with input from industry to prepare you for an engineering career with confidence to communicate and understand both theoretical and applied principles. You will have the opportunities to work with others, work on exciting briefs, use equipment, understand manufacturing processes and how they influence design.
This course is ideal if you’re interested in product design, creative engineering and innovating your ideas. You will be introduced to Computer Aided Design, materials and manufacture with a focus on key engineering skills through the use of examples and problem-based learning.

The BSc (Hons) degree has been structured and developed to fully satisfy the educational requirements for professional registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng).

On this course you will encounter a broad spectrum of teaching and learning activities ranging from workshop based problem based scenarios, timetabled formal lectures, tutorials, laboratory based work and presentations. You will also undertake a range of self-guided activities, either individually or in groups. You have opportunities to use and develop theoretical knowledge, computer based models, and to design, implement and test. The transferable skills of presenting, writing, discussing, working with others, and managing one’s own time are also embedded within the programme.
The assessment methods used with the programme are varied, formative and develop your transferable skills as well as your technical ability. Your ability to plan, judge, communicate complex issues, solve problems logically, and develop original solutions, in appraising critically the work of others, and in managing your own learning are all assessed within aspects of the programme. In addition your technical understanding of the context of your work alongside that of others, your breadth of study, and also the depth of your specialist area of study, are also key to the assessment process.
In addition to the excellent support you will receive from your course teaching team, our central Academic Skills team provides group and one-to-one help to support your learning in a number of areas. These include study skills (including reading, note-taking and presentation skills); written English (including punctuation and grammatical accuracy); academic writing (including how to reference); research skills; critical thinking and understanding arguments; and revision, assessment and examination skills (including time management).
Our AccessAbility Services support students with additional needs such as sensory impairment, or learning difficulties such as dyslexia.
Assessment feedback may take a variety of formats including formative and summative to support quality work. This may be one to one discussions throughout modules, at the end, or via the Virtual Learning Environment.
There are many people available to help and support you during your time with us. The following staff are the key academic members of the Course team but there are also administrative/student guidance staff.
Chris worked as a Design Engineer in the automotive sector and in secondary Education specialising in creativity and Product Design Technology. His interests include historical product design, new manufacturing methods & materials and creative applied prototyping.
For the course starting on 21 September 2020 the tuition fees are:
UK, EU and Channel Island students: This tuition fee is agreed subject to UK government policy and parliamentary regulation. If the UK government passes appropriate legislation, the fee for subsequent years of study may increase in each academic year. But this increase will not exceed the rate of inflation as measured by RPIX**. Any change in fees will apply to both new and continuing students. The University will notify students of any change as early as possible. Further information about fee changes would be posted on the University’s website once this becomes available.
**RPIX is a measure of inflation equivalent to all the items in the Retail Price Index (RPI) excluding mortgage interest payments.
International (Non-EU) students: Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of your course, as long as you complete it in the normal time-frame (i.e. no repeat years or breaks in study).
Students who started their course prior to 2019/20 and undertake their placement year in 2020/21 will have their fee waived to £0. However, you are responsible for any costs incurred in travelling to and from your placement, as well as accommodation and any other associated costs. For students starting their studies from 2019/20 onwards, a discounted fee of no more than 20% of the normal tuition fee will be payable to Staffordshire University for your placement year.
