Innovative and creative, this course will encourage you to create products that focus on the user experience, and explore opportunities for new technology and smart materials.

If you want a career designing anything from toys, lighting and furniture, to household goods and consumer technology, our Product Design pathway could open up a whole world of career opportunities. Likewise, our Transport Design pathway is perfect if you want to focus on concepts for autonomous vehicles, supercars, sustainable mass-transit and motorcycles.

The course is designed to mirror industry practice with students working alongside companies on live projects, often resulting in placement opportunities. Our students work with companies such as JCB, Jaguar Land Rover, Westbridge Furniture, Bombardier, Halfords, Michelin, and Evoke Creative, whose client list includes McDonalds, Google and JD Sports.

Our teaching staff are highly experienced and our students also benefit from weekly visits by associate lecturers. They share their inside knowledge of working as designers in what is an ever-changing industry.

Add consultancy visits to London and New York and, whether you plan to work in the product or transport industry, or as an independent consultant, we’ll provide ample opportunities for you to acquire the skills necessary for success.

Work placements

By choosing the placement route, you will have the opportunity to spend a year in industry working at a selected company. You will be able to develop your skills, knowledge and experience as part of your degree and return to the third year feeling even more confident about tackling your negotiated major project.

Course content

Working in small class sizes, and from your own workspace in our friendly studio, you’ll benefit from lots of one-to-one contact. We’ll help you to think like a designer and you’ll learn a range of transferable skills.

You’ll have access to our fantastic new Smart Zone, a collaborative maker space with the latest rapid prototyping, milling and laser cutting equipment, plus VR, AR, Robotics, 3D scanning and electronics kit. You can also use traditional model making skills in our wood, plastics, resins and metal workshops, all of which will help you bring your innovative designs to life.

You’ll be introduced to core skills through structured and practical design projects, involving idea generation, drawing and rendering, model-making and CAD work. You’ll also cover concept generation, ergonomics and usability and materials and manufacture.

As the course progresses, you’ll cover more advanced CAD projects and the role of rapid prototyping. You can also work on collaborative projects across the University.

In your final year, you’ll complete a major design project. You’ll also have the chance to exhibit your work to the general public and potential employers at our end of year show and the New Designers Exhibition in London.

Our students take part in a number of international design competitions and in January 2018 we took 1st place at the Superyacht UK Young Designer Competition, just 1 year after winning both 1st and 2nd place.

All students take a total of 120 credits per level and 360 credits for the degree as a whole. Your overall grade for the course and your degree classification are based on the marks obtained for modules taken at levels 5 and 6. The full-time course has one start point in September.

Graduates from our Industrial Design degree are highly sought after, securing careers worldwide and working on a wide variety of projects. They work for companies including New Balance, Ferrari, Scott Sports, Evoke Creative, BMW, Ford, Pulse Fitness, Debenhams, Westbridge Furniture, Maserati, Porsche and Triumph. Some graduates are also running their own businesses, teaching, and studying at postgraduate level.

Teaching and assessment

Teaching

The teaching on this course is firmly rooted in studio practice. You develop your skills across a wide range of project-based activities, which take place within a studio setting appropriate to the subject. Sometimes you will work in whole groups, sometimes you will be working in teams, with presentations of your work to your peer group and the academic staff. At other times during your study, you will be working on individual self-negotiated projects. During projects, there will be tutorial sessions with academic staff where you explore your practice in more detail.

In addition, you will take part in lecture and seminar activities which allow you to explore the contextual and professional background to the projects you are undertaking. These are led by your lecturers and also guest tutors from industry who bring their specialist insight into the sessions. You also participate in technical skills instruction sessions with Technical Instructors enabling you to enhance your making and digital skills across a wide range of techniques and approaches.

In addition to the excellent support you will receive from your course teaching team, our central Academic Skills team provides group and one-to-one help to support your learning in a number of areas. These include study skills (including reading, note-taking and presentation skills); written English (including punctuation and grammatical accuracy); academic writing (including how to reference); research skills; critical thinking and understanding arguments; and revision, assessment and examination skills (including time management).

Feedback is usually provided to you orally, with a written record kept either by the tutor or by you. This is sometimes produced as the result of peer or self-assessment exercises.

All modules also included formal or “summative” assessment tasks and the grades from the formal assessments count towards your module mark. You will normally receive feedback on coursework assessments within 20 working days following the date of submission.

Staff

You will be taught by an expert teaching team whose expertise and knowledge are closely matched to the content of the modules on the course. The team includes senior academics and professional practitioners with industry experience.
