Accounting student secures exclusive scholarship

“It's really exciting to be the first person to receive the award. I'm interested in going into fraud or forensic accounting so when I saw the scholarship and what it offered I had to go for it!”

BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance

An Accounting student from Staffordshire University has won an exclusive scholarship to fund her degree.

BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance student Rose Dawson, 22 from Brixworth, Northamptonshire, is the first recipient of the Association of Fraud Examiners (ACFE) Martin Grieves Memorial Scholarship.

The new annual award seeks out an outstanding student to help fund their education and career in fraud investigation.

Rose said: “It's really exciting to be the first person to receive the award. I'm interested in going into fraud or forensic accounting so when I saw the scholarship and what it offered I had to go for it!”

Third-year student Rose applied on the recommendation of lecturer Karl McCormack and had to create a three-minute video entitled 'Fraud. What it means to me'.

“My degree course definitely provides a good grounding in this area. I'm doing a module on Fraud Risk Management and want to do my literature review on fraud as well.” Rose explained.

“The scholarship offers great opportunities to network with people from the industry and help kick-start my career.”

The scholarship covers the cost of Rose's final year fees and will fund the Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) qualification after she graduates.

Rose will also be offered a mentor and is invited to attend the ACFE annual conference in November.

She said: “The scholarship isn’t something that I would have gone searching for myself. My lecturer Karl always pushes people to do more and I wouldn't have had this opportunity if it wasn't for him.”

Rose previously won the Proud to be Staffs 'Student Staff Member of the Year' award from the Students' Union for her role as a Marketing Assistant (pictured).

Karl commented: “Rose is an amazing student. Not only does she approach all of her modules with the same positive attitude but always has a smile on her face and time for everyone.

“Rose has a great work ethic and produces work of a really high quality. She is very deserving of this scholarship.”
