BAFTA winner shares industry insight

"Their visit was very insightful and a valuable addition to the industry talks hosted by the University.”

Daniel Hopkins, Senior Lecturer, Media (Film) Production

A BAFTA winning film director visited Staffordshire University recently to speak to students about getting ahead in the industry, writes Fiona Cole.

David Blair, who has gained three BAFTA's in his career as a director, was joined by writer Roger Hadfield who he worked with on the upcoming film AWAY starring actor Timothy Spall.

David and Roger shared their advice and experience with the film students studying at the university. Addressing the students Roger said: “You should write as much as you can and share it with whoever will listen.”

Students asked David about his career as a director and about the actors he has worked with.  He commented: “Every actor is different, some actors need coaching before they do a scene - they'll need to sit down with you and go over what is wanted from them. No actor needs the same TLC.”

Daniel Hopkins, Senior Lecturer and Course Leader, said: “David and Roger were invited by Mike Knowles, Part Time Lecturer for Media (Film) Production Awards and also Producer of David and Roger's upcoming film Away.  Their visit was very insightful and a valuable addition to the industry talks hosted by the University.”
