Clearing was just the beginning for journalist Emma

“If you'd told me three years ago that I'd be graduating from uni with a first, having had two jobs already then I would have just thought you were lying. Staffs has definitely changed my life – it's been great!”

Emma James, BA (Hons) Journalism

Emma didn't get the A-Levels results she had hoped for but after coming to Staffordshire University through Clearing she has graduated with a first class degree and writes for national newspapers.

BA (Hons) Journalism graduate Emma James thought she had lost her chance of going to University when her grades weren’t as high as she had expected.

She explained: “I had a gut feeling that I hadn’t done well and did some research into Clearing the night before results. Some of the other universities I called up were quite rude and I kept getting put through to different people. At one point I actually started crying down the phone.”

“I chose Staffs because when I called up the person I spoke to on the phone, who ended up being one of my lecturers, remembered me from my interview. This made me feel that, compared to other universities, Staffs genuinely cared about me as a person.”

Emma fully embraced her time at Staffs, working for student news website StaffsLive and gaining valuable work experience with the BBC and Sky. She even secured two jobs before the end of her course, working at The Sentinel newspaper during the last six months of her studies before being hired by Cavendish Press supplying articles for national publications.

She said: “I think that Staffs Live makes the course one of the best in the country and the lecturers definitely helped a lot. You've got so many opportunities here so just take them and run!”

Emma also acted as an ambassador for her course at open days and as a clearing adviser, using her own experiences and to help others.

“Clearing isn't the end, it's just the beginning.” Emma commented.

“If you'd told me three years ago that I'd be graduating from uni with a first, having had two jobs already then I would have just thought you were lying. Staffs has definitely changed my life – it's been great!”
