Design competition for disability access campaign

Design students from Staffordshire University have been given the opportunity to have their work displayed around Stoke-on-Trent as part of a city-wide campaign to promote disability access.

Students are being encouraged to develop design concepts for the campaign, which is being run by Stoke City Council’s Access Team.

A competition has been launched to generate ideas and give entrants the opportunity to win one of three £100 prizes as well as have their work developed for use on billboards around the city.

A spokesperson for the Access Team said: “The challenge is to come up with a design concept to promote a positive image of disability.

“The design should reflect the diversity of visible and hidden disabilities, challenge stereotypes and above all make people stop and think!”

Equality and Diversity Officer Alison Hunt, who is the Access Team’s contact at the University, commented: “Our students are perfectly placed to come up with new and innovative ideas that can help promote equality.

“The competition is also a great way for them to get their work out in the public realm, as it will be displayed across the city as part of a three year campaign to promote disability awareness and equality in Stoke-on-Trent.”

The design concepts are encouraged to be as broad and diverse as possible, while still relevant to the subject. Winning entries will be sent to a graphic designer, with the final posters displayed on billboards around Stoke-on-Trent in autumn this year.
