Elvis was alive and well in Stafford recently to present the Alzheimer’s Society with a cheque for £1700, on behalf of Staffordshire University.
Professional Elvis and Stoke resident Mark Clay, first visited the University’s Stafford campus last month to perform to a packed crowd of fans and Alzheimer’s supporters, putting on a rocking show at a themed 50’s evening held at the Legends Venue and organised by University Vice Chancellor Professor Christine King.
The University formed a partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society earlier in the year and has since been working on fundraising for the charity. Christine cares for her father who has dementia and came up with the idea after seeing Mark perform on several occasions.
She said: “I am a huge fan of Elvis, and now Mark, and have witnessed how his music can excite and move people. After seeing Mark on stage in the past, I knew that if we asked him to perform at our Elvis for Alzheimer’s evening, he would definitely bring in the crowds to make some money for the society.”
“The evening went brilliantly and Mark certainly lived up to our expectations and gave everybody a really good night. I am delighted that it paid off and we managed to collect such a good amount to go towards the fantastic work in which the Alzheimer’s Society is involved.”
After his performance, the donations kept coming in and today he revisited the University to present Alzheimer’s Society representatives Elaine Ivis, Area Manager West Midlands and Ray Nash, Community Fundraiser West Midlands, with the grand total raised by the evening. The presentation recieved press interest, with local newspapers The Sentinel and the Express and Star attending the handover of the cheque.
The University has asked Mark to return to the University’s Stoke campus for a second performance in the new year after receiving many requests for a encore at Stoke.
