“The course at Staffordshire University has been unreal, it is so beneficial for anyone who wants to do forensic investigation."

Natasha Lomas, BSc(Hons) Forensic Investigation

It may look like a scene from the latest episode of CSI but Staffordshire University’s crime scene house has been the cornerstone for one graduate's success.

Natasha Lomas who graduated from BSc(Hons) Forensic Investigation is now working as a Special Constable for Staffordshire Police and believes the course and new facilities at the University have benefitted her immensely

“The course at Staffordshire University has been unreal, it is so beneficial for anyone who wants to do forensic investigation.

“The lecturers have all got previous experience within the area, they know what they’re talking about.

“They have got the crime scene house, which has been a massive benefit for us doing crime scenes, and now we have the new Science Centre so the equipment is really good,” she explained.

Natasha collected the Faculty Prize for the Best Overall Performance from a final year student in forensic investigation and explains how the University’s close links with Staffordshire Police has helped her gain experience as Special Constable.

“Back in February the University gave us the opportunity to take on a placement.

“We then had to do a process like you would a job interview, we had to go to an open day and then write a proposal for a project, then do an interview and from 40 students four students got their placement.”

The 2014 graduate collected first prize at this year’s GradEX in the Policing, Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science for her project.

Natasha explained: “GradEX was an amazing opportunity, we got to see lots of potential employers and it was a good chance to talk to someone about your dissertation after taking so long to complete it.

“To win it was absolutely amazing,” she added.
