Fast-track student in bid to accelerate racing career

Fast-track law degree student Roger Grimshaw with the University branded racing mini and truck

A fast track degree student from Staffordshire University is to undergo the ultimate test of driver ability as he takes his place on the starting grid for the Mini Challenge.

Roger Grimshaw, 44, from Eccleshall, Staffordshire is being sponsored by Staffordshire University to take part in the 18-race Mini Challenge which will be televised on Sky Sports and Motors TV and is part of the Dunlop Great and British Motorsport Festival.

Roger, who is on the home straight of a two year degree in Law, will be assisted by students on the BSc (Hons) Motorsport Technology course who will be making sure the Mini is raceworthy and assisting him trackside when he competes at circuits including Brands Hatch and Donington.

Roger said: “It just seemed like a golden opportunity. I’m on the fast-track to get the degree under my belt in as little time as possible and I’ll also be doing my utmost to complete the circuits in the shortest possible time.

“It’s great to have Staffordshire University students as my race team and I’ll be proudly promoting the University’s innovative courses at every opportunity.”

As part of Staffordshire University’s drive to reach new audiences, Roger’s racing Mini and the race truck which is used to transport the vehicle to race circuits, is decorated with the University’s distinctive ‘accelerate your learning’ branding.

Dean of Law, Rosemary Evans said: ”Studying for a degree over a two year period, rather than three, has clearly been of no hindrance to a high achiever like Roger and we are delighted that he will be flying the Law School flag at racing circuits throughout the country.”

Roger is also taking the opportunity of the Mini Challenge to raise awareness of his chosen charity; Cannock based Newlife Foundation, which provides support for disabled children and their families.

Newlife Foundation CEO, Sheila Brown OBE said: “This is an excellent opportunity for the charity to increase its awareness, and will hopefully lead the way for other teams to support local charities.”

The first races take place at Rockingham on April 18/19. To track Roger’s progress throughout the season visit
