Graduate to spend year at sea filming documentary

"It was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down - to sail around the world, to challenge myself and to make that many documentaries is pretty special."

Rich Edwards, BA (Hons) Film, Television and Radio Studies

A Staffordshire University graduate is embarking on an 11 month adventure circumnavigating the globe whilst filming the world's longest yacht race.

Since completing a BA (Hons) Film, Television and Radio Studies degree at the University in 2005, Rich Edwards has worked in the television industry, filming sports events around the world and producing programming for Sky Sports and the BBC.

Rich's latest job is as a shooting Producer / Director on the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. He will create seven separate hour-long documentaries as 12 Clipper Yachts complete a gruelling 40,000 miles trip, which will be broadcast in countries across the globe.

The yachting teams will set off from St Katherine docks in London on August 30th and finish at the same location in July 2016.

Rich said: "It was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down - to sail around the world, to challenge myself and to make that many documentaries is pretty special."

The 32-year-old, who is based in Cambridge and originally from Wrexham, says his studies at the University were great preparation for what he is doing now.

"The course taught us the theory and then gave us the opportunity to put it into practice rather than throwing you in at the deep end, which I think is the best way to learn." explained Rich.

"We were given work experience opportunities on the course which I think really helped because it means you can hit the ground running when you graduate."

In preparation for the feat, Rich took part in the same intense 4-week sailing course as the competitors and says he is ready to get out on the water.

"I feel focussed and dead keen to go out there and do it. Obviously I feel a bit apprehensive as I know there will be times when I might be scared or surprised but there’s only so much you can prepare for this kind of challenge."

Rich will start the journey on Great Britain's yacht and will then 'boat hop' as he films the different crews over the 11 months. The graduate will also share his progress in a Staffordshire University blog.
