"I've made so many friends here. It's the people that make Staffs as special as it is. I'm going to miss that, the people and the Business School."
Sarah Bowyer, BA (Hons) International Business Management
The first year of studying BA (Hons) Business and HR Management opened up a world of opportunities for HR administrator from Alsager.
After starting the degree to advance her established career, Sarah Bowyer, 27, found a passion for the international elements of business so decided to transfer onto the BA (Hons) International Business Management degree.
She said: “This time three years ago I was a HR administrator for B&Q, and now I'm graduating with a first class degree.”
Making the most of her university life, Sarah took part in the Chartered Institute of Marketing's The Pitch competition in 2016.
Her team made it through to the national finals in London where they had to present to some of the most influential businesses including LinkedIn, IBM and Aviva.
“We finished in the top 20. I didn’t think we would get as far as we did and without the support of our lecturers we couldn't have got that far.
“Even though I was a mature student with industry experience, I was still nervous with public speaking at first. I've taken the experience from the competition and applied it to interviews and I'm not afraid anymore.”
Before taking the leap from full-time work into education Sarah had a lot to consider.
“My main fear was that I would be the only person like me on the course. That just wasn't the case at all. There were people of different ages, from different backgrounds and with different ambitions in my class.
“I've made so many friends here. It's the people that make Staffs as special as it is. I'm going to miss that, the people and the Business School."
Sarah's top tip to anyone heading into higher education is to be dedicated to your dreams.
“Give it 110 per cent. If you're willing to put in the effort then the lecturers will be there to support your goals.”
