"For me, networking with industry professionals and being given all these opportunities on the course has been key to getting my job."
Daniel Breton, BSc (Hons) Computer Games Programming
Daniel Breton landed a job with a top video games developer before he even graduated, thanks to the industry connections on his course at Staffordshire University.
The 22 year old from Southport, studied BSc (Hons) Computer Games Programming after discovering a passion for programming at college.
"I did Games Design at college but decided I wanted to do something more technical than arty so decided to do programming instead. I asked my college lecturer what uni was best for games and they recommended Staffs!"
Staffordshire University's Computer Games courses relocated from Stafford to Stoke-on-Trent last year following a £40m campus investment with new facilities including bespoke gaming labs and a motion capture studio.
Daniel said: "The facilities are really cool and we’ve got bigger rooms now which is great for working in groups."
The course gives students real-world experience in developing games from an initial concept to the finished product. Lecturers have extensive industry experience and the course maintains strong links with top computer games developers.
During the final year Course Leader Paul Roberts invited several computer games companies to perform mock job interviews with students and for Daniel this led to a real interview and job offer. He is now working as a programmer for top games developer Red Kite Games.
"Throughout the course there’s been lots of industry opportunities incorporated into the modules." commented Daniel.
"For group projects we've been given industry feedback on our games. For me, networking with industry professionals and being given all these opportunities on the course has been key to getting my job.
"I’ve been there for a month now and it’s been really good. I thought it would be quite scary but everyone’s been really welcoming and it’s been great!"
