Life in the fast lane for business graduates

“The course has really helped me, I did business at A level and to progress that into degree level has helped me in the long-term to get a job.”

Gaby Mitchell, BA(Hons) Business Management (Two-Year Fast-Track)

Two Staffordshire graduates have spent the last couple of years in the fast lane after completing the BA(Hons) Business Management degree via the two-year fast-track option.

Gaby Mitchell and Jonathan Garside, both of Stoke-on-Trent have both now secured jobs upon finishing their two-year degree. Despite having a year less at university than most undergraduates Gaby and Jonathan have made the most of the unique two-year option.

Gaby said: “It was great, obviously doing it in two years instead of three meant it was a really unique experience and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it.

“I lived at home whilst I was doing it so I didn’t get the social aspect of things but as a University it was spot on,” she explained.

Upon completing her degree Gaby started working for Edmundson Electrical as a Trainee Manager role and believes the course has given a broad skill-set for the world of business.

“I am a Graduate Trainee Manager now for a company called Edmundson and without a degree I couldn’t have the job. Being in a sales role, it has benefitted me greatly by having background experience within business.

“The course has really helped me, I did business at A level and to progress that into degree level has helped me in the long-term to get a job,” she added.

Jonathan secured a job as a Marketing & Customer Services Consultant at Norton & Stafford Bathrooms where he heads their marketing campaigns through various platforms.

“I started a job in September in marketing for a small business with responsibility with quite a lot of practical hands-on stuff, which is exactly what I wanted,” he explained.

Jonathan believes the two-year alternative was perfect for him as it allowed him to enter the graduate jobs market a year earlier than many his age.

The fast-track route is supported by a personal tutor for students and for Jonathan it was Award Leader Vicky Roberts who guided him through the fast-paced degree and beyond.

He said: “They have been great, especially my personal tutor Vicky who just deals with fast-track students and has been there to support us from the start, right through to now that we’ve graduated.

“I’ve asked her advice for jobs and she is emailing me back all the time.”
